In clay-on-sand with a low watertable, potatoes produced a much deeper root system when the clay cover was thick than when it was thin. However, with a high watertable, root penetration was hampered to such an extent that the thickness of the clay layer had little effect on root depth. In soils with a thin clay cover root depth was independent of the height of the watertable.
