The trial took place on a productive perennial-ryegrass/white-clover pasture sown in 1947. The lime, phosphate and potash status of the soil was satisfactory. The treatments comprised 3 forms of N (urea, nitrochalk and ammonium sulfate), 3 rates of N (nil, 0.3 and 0.6 cwt. N per ac.) and 3 types of cutting (4 cuts at the dried-grass stage, 3 cuts at the silage stage and 2 cuts at the hay stage).
