Underfeeding. 6. Limits of resistance to underfeeding and the percentage daily loss of bodyweight in growing rats subjected to underfeeding

Boll. Soc. ital. Biol. sper 27: 77-80

Eight adult and 22 growing male rats were used. Six of the growing rats were given no food; the remainder were maintained on a complete diet. A group of 8 adult and 8 growing rats received an amount supplying 0.26 Cal. per g. bodyweight; 8 growing rats received an amount supplying 0.35 Cal. per g. bodyweight. The starved, growing rats died in about 4 days, having lost on an average 30 per cent, of their weight.
