Underplanting.

Underplanting.

Erdo 1(2): 131-4, 163, 167

The author discusses the main, but hitherto neglected, role of underplanting in Hungarian foresty, viz., for rehabilitating the many thousand hectares of ruined stands e.g. the 30- to 40-year-old Quercus robur on the uplands, and also numerous stands of Q. cerris and Hornbeam. Species recommended include Beech, Lime and Red Oak; also Spruce, Silver Fir (both on certain types of soil) and above all, Douglas Fir.
