Yield and composition of sorghum juice in relation to time of harvest in Oklahoma

Yield and composition of sorghum juice in relation to time of harvest in Oklahoma

Agron Jour 46(4): 157-160

Eight varieties of sweet sorghum were harvested at bi-weekly intervals from late Aug. until frost during a three year period, and the juices were analyzed for solids, ash, N, reducing sugars and sucrose. Percentage yields of juice and lbs. of sugar per acre also are given. Solids in the juice increased irregularly until near the seasons close, when a slight decrease occurred. Titratable acidity increased regularly during the season, often doubling or tripling in value. Percentages of sucrose increased generally throughout the season or at least remained constant during the last month while reducing sugars fluctuated irregularly or decreased. Percentage yields of juice normally decreased during these harvest periods and it is this decrease that accounts for the generally lowering yields of sugar per acre from mid-Sept. until frost, notwithstanding the percentage increases in sugars. Avg. yields of sugars varied from 1400 to 2000 lbs. per acre. Normally, max. yields of sugar were secured during the period Sept. 1 to 25.
