A contribution to the synthesis of the pyrrolidine ring of nicotine.

Tobacco seeds were germinated in petri dishes containing nutrient solution, to which C14-labelled amino acids were added, and the quantity and radioactivity of the nicotine produced was determined 6, 8 and 10 days later. In all cases the amounts of nicotine were small after 6 days, but they increased fivefold or more after 8 days, and then almost doubled again after 10 days.
