A study of the healing of the union in hand-and machine-grafted vines.

The vine variety Afuz Ali was grafted on Berlandieri X Riparia Kober 5BB rootstocks by hand and by the Austrian grafting machine RH 35 Export. With machine grafting the area of union was 2.6 times greater, and at the place of the union 1.7 times more callus was formed, than with hand grafting. Healing was 21-29% better with hand than with machine grafting. Small necrotic areas were found at the unions and were always more frequent on machine-grafted than on hand-grafted material.
