An evaluation of competition between weeds and sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L.)

Field and glasshouse studies were carried out to determine the earliest period in the life of sugar beet plants at which weed competition would result in irreversible growth check and yield decrease. The results of glasshouse experiments indicated that yields of mature sugar beet were decreased when weed competition was present for more than 4 weeks. In field trials where overall weed stands were present, all densities of weed population reduced yields.
