Bone diseases due to calcium and phosphorus deficiency and their relationship to parathyroid function and the mineral content of the blood in growing chickens.

Bone diseases due to calcium and phosphorus deficiency and their relationship to parathyroid function and the mineral content of the blood in growing chickens.

Zbl. VetMed 9: 1009-1040

There was an increase in parathyroid weight with hyperplasia, increased mitosis and enlargement of nuclei in chicks on a low Ca and normal or high P diet. There was also retarded growth in limb bones, thickening of epiphyseal cartilage and fibrous osteodystrophy. Ca content of bone and serum was low. In chicks on a low P and normal or high Ca diet parathyroids were atrophied, bone growth was retarded and the Ca-P ratio in bone ash was increased.
