At the Station the breeding herd of Herefords is maintained at 150-180 purebred. Studies have been carried out on the effects of size on suitability for use as breeding animals and for fattening, and on the effects of inbreeding and line crossing. Conclusions reached in a 12-yr. period are considered and summarised. Identifiable abnormalities attributable to a genetic source were infrequent; viability, conception rate and calf crop of inbreds were considerably lower than those of outbreds.
