Chromosome complement dosage in relation to seed development of species hybrids in Nicotiana

Chromosome complement dosage in relation to seed development of species hybrids in Nicotiana

Bot Gaz 123(1): 70-77

Diploid and amphidiploid hybrids of Nicotiana rustica x N. tabacum are highly sterile as a consequence of embryo abortion. Studies were made of seed production and germinability in hybrids involving different dosages of N. rustica and N. tabacum chromosome complements at various levels of polyploidy. In general, fertility was improved as the complement ratio deviated from 1:1. Similar relationships were observed when other related and unrelated species of the genus were included in the investigation.
