Chromosome complements in parthenogenetic turkey embryos

The incidence of parthenogenetic development is high in turkey eggs but embryos form in only 4% of the germ discs and embryonic development is retarded. The diploid chromosome complement in turkeys is 18 macrochromosomes including 2 sex chromosomes in, and 17 macrochromosomes including 1 sex chromosome in; in addition, both sexes have about 60 microchromosomes. Considerable variation was noted in the chromosome number of somatic diploid cells from parthenogenetic embryos and tissues.
