In many characters O. glaberrima was distinct from O. sativa although in other characters the variation ranges of the two species overlapped and they had similar patterns of correlations. The two species were found to be separated by a sterility barrier and no true intermediates between them were found. The results indicate that the two species may have arisen independently from different wild ancestors.
