The following conclusions were drawn from a series of experiments with maize for silage carried out at Ultuna in 1951-4. Time of sowing should be governed by soil temperature and the risk of night frosts. The soil temperature should be +or- 8 degrees C. 100-125 kg seed per ha gave the best results. The crop should be harvested late in Sept. before the 1st frosts. Medium-early to medium-late varieties gave higher yields than early varieties.
