Cultivation of maize in 1957 in the Jena district and the harvesting and proper ensiling of silage maize and green fodder maize

Cultivation of maize in 1957 in the Jena district and the harvesting and proper ensiling of silage maize and green fodder maize

Jahrb. Arbeitsgemeinschaft Futterungsberatung. 58. 1: 70-76

It is recommended that ear-bearing maize suitable for silage should be grown, wherever possible, in preference to green maize. It should normally be sown between mid-April and the end of May, thinned to permit the formation of as many cobs as possible and harvested at the dough or milk wax stage, when it contains about 25 to 30 per cent. dry matter. Protein-rich hay with maize silage 12 to 15 and fodder beet 20 to 25 kg. per animal daily formed a good diet for dairy cows.
