The genomic constitutions of O. sativa (2n = 24), O. minuta (2n = 48) and O. latifolia (2n = 48) are respectively AA, BBCC and CCDD. Certain backcrosses were studied from the standpoint of fertility and chromosome number and behavior. (O. sativa x O. minuta) x O. sativa = (AA x BBCC) x AA, and produces AABC, with 12 bivalents (2A) and 24 univalents (B and C). (O. sativa x latifolia) x O. sativa - (AA x CCDD) x AA, and produces AACD with 12 bivalents and 24 univalents (C and D).
