Chromosome numbers were determined in relatively large unselected F1S from (1) S. officinarum (2n = 80) pollinated by S. officinarum, (2) S. officinarum pollinated by S. robustum (2n = 60 and 80) and (3) S. officinarum pollinated by S. spontaneum (2n = 64, 80, 112 and 128). With very few exceptions, the first group of crosses gave rise, as expected, to 80-chromosome (n + n) progeny. The second group also produced hybrids with n + n numbers.
