Abstract
Electrodialytic or HC1 pretreatment of living roots produced similar values for cation-exchange capacity and had a similar effect on respiratory activity. The titration curves suggest that stronger exchange sites are distributed on the root surfaces than within. Cation-exchange capacity is affected considerably by nutritional status and growth stage.
