Effect of threonine-induced amino acid imbalance on the excretion of tryptophan metabolites by the rat

Amino acid imbalance was produced in 4 weanling rats fed a 9% salt-free hydrolyzed casein, niacin-free diet plus 0.09% DL-tryptophan and 0.40% of DL-threonine. Four control rats were fed a similar diet without the added threonine. Radiotryptophan was substituted for tryptophan on the thirteenth day of the 14-day experiment to permit estimating the extent of excretion of tryptophan and its metabolites in the urine and feces and as CO2. The experimental rats excreted 11.6% to 14.2% (average = 12.6%) of the ingested activity in these ways, whereas the controls excreted 6.6% to 9.8% (average = 8.2%). The results support the hypothesis that concomitant with the excretion of surplus amino acids in amino acid imbalance, the limiting amino acid is wasted through catabolism and excretion and thus increases the deficiency and the growth retardation.
