NO 3 application (40 kg/ha N as NaNO3) to two uncultivated soils increased the mineral-N content of soil by up to 80 kg/ha. NH4 application (as sulfate) did not increase the mineral-N content by more than 40 kg/ha; the effect of NH4 NO3 was intermediate. The differential effect of the form of N was larger on the better-class soil. The differential effects were observed particularly when periods with little rain, but when soil-moisture content was moderate, were followed by rainy weather.
