Factors affecting the hardiness of the apple

Factors affecting the hardiness of the apple

Diss. Abstr 20: 3006-8. bibl. 5

During the early part of the dormant season the varieties Staymared, Baldwin and Rome Beauty were more tender than Delicious or Franklin, while Hibernal, Virginia Crab, Columbia and Malus robusta No. 5 were found to possess a high degree of cold resistance. The varieties showing early hardiness increased in cold resistance more rapidly, attained maximum hardiness at an earlier date and likewise showed an earlier reduction in hardiness than did those which were more tender in early dormancy.
