Factors influencing the role of clover in grass-clover leys fertilized with nitrogen at different rates. II. The effects of the variety of white clover on the yields of total herbage and clover

A grass-clover mixture receiving a seed-bed dressing of 0.8 cwt/acre Nitrochalk, 3.2 cwt super, 4 cwt each of ground mineral phosphate and limestone, and 1 cwt KCl was treated in three-year trials with 0-10 cwt Nitrochalk annually. Highest yields of mixed herbage were obtained from mixtures containing perennial ryegrass, and highest yields of clover came from those containing meadow fescue. Cocksfoot was a poor companion grass for clover but mixtures containing this grass responded well to N, while the reverse was true for meadow fescue. The variety of clover in the mixture was of minor importance, compared with the variety of grass, in determining the response to N applications and the contribution of clover to yields within each N treatment.
