It has been maintained that maize perishes at -2 degrees or -3 degrees C., but there are also reports that certain lines of maize will tolerate a spring frost of -4.4 degrees C. when at the 3- to 5-leaf stage. Moreover, in some regions of Siberia where maize is a new crop, it is claimed that the plants tolerate - 7 degrees C. During 1955-6 at the above Station numerous experiments with different varieties of maize have thrown light on the problem of selection in maize for frost resistance.
