Surveys were made from January to March of 1961 and 1962 of the basic feeds given to dairy cows at 563 and 407 farms in all districts of East Germany. In the first year average daily intakes were, in kg: silage 23 6, fodder beet 10.6, other succulent feeds 2.0 and hay 2.8. On 367 of the farms there was an average intake of 1.4 kg concentrates daily. Average daily milk yield was 8.02 kg.
