Inheritance in the cowpea (Vigna sinensis Endb.). IV. Lethal combinations

Four types of lethal combinations, respectively designated le a'. a, le k'. k, le k". k and le k'. k (x), have been identified in intervarietal crosses. The last three may be identical except for the action of modifiers. The outstanding characteristics of le a. a were the general brittleness of the tissues and the accumulation of brownish-black material, mainly in the cortex. The majority of the plants died when about six weeks old, but some survived until formation of the first flower buds.
