Inheritance of X-ray diffraction pattern and its correlation with other properties in upland cotton

The angle of the X-ray pattern is inversely correlated with strength of cotton fibers. Hybrid populations following a cross between Florida Green Seed, a low X-ray angle cotton, and Turner's C having a wide X-ray angle indicated that the X-ray diffraction pattern was inherited quantitatively rather than qualitatively. An intermediate dominance expression was measured with a broader distribution in the F2 and backcross generation than in either of the parental or F1 populations. X-ray angle gave a negative and highly significant correlation coefficient of -.65 with strength of fiber as measured by the Pressley index in the F2 population but was not correlated with either fineness, length, lint index, or seed index.
