Inheritance of alkaloids in hybrids between flue-cured tobacco and related amphidiploids

Modern derivatives of the probable progenitors of N. tabacum combined into amphidiploid combinations were used in a study of the inheritance of alkaloids. The alkaloid content of these "synthetic tobaccos" differ from that of flue-cured tobacco in both quantity and kind. In the cured leaf of the flue-cured tobacco varieties tested, nicotine was the predominant alkaloid and nornicotine was found in lesser amounts. In the synthetic tobaccos nicotine and nornicotine were found in approximately equal proportions and total alkaloid content was approximately one-third that of N. tabacum. In one of the two populations studied the ability to convert nicotine to nornicotine appeared to be largely governed by two pairs of dominant and independent factors. In the second population a single pair of dominant factors appear to control the conversion of alkaloids. Total alkaloid production appears to be influenced by several genes. The recovery of true-breeding nicotine lines with alkaloid content less than 1/3 that of flue-cured tobacco suggests no genetic or physiological associations between the amount and nature of alkaloid produced that would prevent the development of nonconverting low-nicotine varieties.
