A spontaneous mutation simulating the wheat species T. sphaerococcum was found in common wheat. The mutant expression, designated sphaerococcum simulator, is inherited as a single gene or gene block incompletely dominant in effect. Plants homozygous dominant for the sphaerococcum simulator are sterile dwarfs. The gene for the sphaerococcum simulator effect is not allelic with nor linked to the gene for the sphaerococcum effect on chromosome 3D. It is associated with a glume discoloration character very similar to the brown necrosis seen in Hope wheat and its derivatives. The symbol Sp2 is suggested for the sphaerococcum simulator gene.
