Inheritance of coleoptile length and seedling height and their relation to plant height of four winter wheat crosses

Four winter wheat crosses involving semi-dwarf selections and standard-height varieties were analyzed to establish the inheritance and the heritability of coleoptile length and seedling height. Heritability estimates were computed according to 4 techniques. Relatively high heritability values for coleoptile length were obtained by using the regression and standard unit methods for the Royal X S.D. 14 and Nigger X S.D. 50-3-3 crosses. Apparently effective selection for coleoptile length could be practiced in the F2 generation. Values for seedling height indicated effective selection would be possibly only for the Royal X S.D. 14 cross. The heritability values for these characteristics for the other crosses were relatively low. On the basis of heritability estimates and the behavior of the F2 frequency distributions of coleoptile length and seedling height for all crosses, the assumption was that both major genes and minor modifying genes were involved in the inheritance of these characteristics. Highly significant positive phenotypic correlations between coleoptile length and seedling height for all 4 crosses were revealed. The low degree of association of coleoptile length and seedling height with plant height in all crosses except the Royal X S.D. 14 cross suggests that semidwarf selections with long coleoptile and tall seedling height may be developed.
