Inheritance of crown rust resistance transferred from diploid to hexaploid oats

The genetics of resistance to races 264 and 294 of the fungus causing crown rust of oats was investigated in the diploid Avena strigosa, C.D. 3820, and in several lines of A. sativa which possessed resistance transferred from the diploid C.D. 3820. The diploid species had a single dominant gene, Pc-15, which conditioned resistance to both races 264 and 294, and one additional gene, Pc-23, which conditioned resistance to race 264. At the hexaploid level, lines were found with the Pc-15 gene, others with the Pc-23 gene, and still others with both genes. The reaction of the 2 genes was the same in the hexaploid as in the diploid. Cytological observations were made to determine the degree to which these diploid genes were incorporated into the hexaploid chromosome complement. F1 hybrids involving lines with gene Pc-23 and normal A. sativa had regular meiosis, while those involving gene Pc-15 were highly irregular.
