Inheritance of crushing strength and rind thickness in several inbred lines of corn

Two stalk lodging susceptible lines, 2 lodging resistant lines, the 6 possible F1 single crosses, the 6 F2's, the 12 first generation, and the 12 second generation backcrosses among the 4 parents were planted in a randomized complete block. Rind thickness and stalk crushing strength of 2-inch stalk sections were determined and the inheritance of these traits was investigated. Differences in rind thickness and crushing strength were in part genetically determined. High crushing strength and high rind thickness values were prepotent to lowvalues. Within the resistant and susceptible groups, crushing strength appears to be controlled by the same or similar genes. A similar relationholds true for rind thickness in susceptible and resistant groups, respectively. Specific combining ability was of greater importance than general combining ability for both traits. The estimates of these genetic parameters are undoubtedly biased from genotypic-environmental interactions, however. The high correlation which was previously reportedbetween crushing strength and rind thickness was evidenced in this study.
