Inheritance of cyanogenesis in white clover

F2 Progenies obtained from the New Zealand X Borrowdale cross in 1948 and 1949 gave a good fit to 9:7 and 9:3:3:1 ratios. The exceptional cases were due to deficiency of phenotypes containing the glucoside. Test cross progenies also gave a good fit to 1:3 and 1:1:1:1 ratios. Various ratios have been observed among the progenies of 42 F1 families obtained from the parents of different genotypic constitution. They fitted well with the expected ratios except in a few cases. The observations clearly demonstrate that cyanogenesis in white clover is genetically controlled. Two independent and complementary genes, Li and Ac are responsible for the formation of the enzyme linamarase and the glucoside lotaus-tralin respectively. When these are present together, cyanogenesis occurs. The occurrence of some unexpected phenotypes among the hybrid progenies may be due to the variation of glucoside or enzyme content of the individuals. It may be suggested, therefore, that the genes Li and Ac with their respective modifiers, constitute a "polygenic system".
