Inheritance of floret colour in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius Linn.)

Data obtained from six crosses at the Agricultural Research Institute, Nagpur, indicated that floret colour was controlled by three independent genes, Y, D and J. Yellow florets turning to pink upon fading depended on the basic gene Y. D intensified the action of Y, deep yellow florets being produced which turned red upon fading. By itself D was inert.
