Inheritance of greenbug resistance in barley

Omugi, Derbent, and Kearney were very resistant to the green-bug. All progeny of the resistant X resistant crosses, with one exception, were resistant. The F1 plants of resistant X susceptible crosses were completely resistant. In nearly all crosses the susceptible families were as susceptible as the susceptible check. Only one cross (Khayyam X Omugi) reached the lower limits of probability for monogenic inheritance. Evidence from the resistant X resistant crosses indicated that the three varieties derived their resistance from the same gene or closely linked genes. No associations were found between the gene for resistance to the greenbug and genes conditioning kernel row number, rough awns, hooded, black pericarp, covered seed, and stem rust resistance. It was concluded from the data presented and observations from the breeding program in progress that resistance can be transferred from the varieties Omugi, Derbent, and Kearney and can be maintained in the resistant lines.
