Inheritance of heading date in some spring wheat varieties

Spike initiation and heading dates were studied in crosses between early and late spring wheat varieties fall-planted in Israel. The early varieties (B. I. P. M., F. A. 8193 and Oued-Zenati X Bouteille) differeniated their spike primordia 20-35 days after emergence and reached heading 30-60 days after differentiation. The late varieties (Lee, Merit, II-50-17 and Yuma) initiated their spikes 60-75 days after emergence and headed 70-85 days later. In the examined crosses, the respective early and late heading parental varieties were found to differ by one factor pair determining spike initiation and another factor pair controlling the length of the period from initiation to heading. These 2 factor pairs were found to be linked. The estimates of the recombination values were 10-25%. Early spike initiation was dominant to late initiation and a short period from initiation to heading was dominant to a long period.
