Two types of seedling abnormalities from interspecific crosses between P. vulgaris and P. coccineus are described. A series of three alleles at two independent loci is proposed to explain the inheritance of the abnormal seedlings. The loci are designated B and T. The alleles are designated v, vc and c for each loci. At the B locus BV is incompatible with Bc, producing B dwarfs. BVC is compatible with Bvc or Bc. The same hypothesis is proposed for the T locus. Incompatibility at both loci produces a dwarf type designated BT. Interspecific cross-compatible genotypes TvcTvcBvcBvc were obtained in segregating populations of intervarietal P. vulgaris populations.
