Inheritance of muzzle colour, muzzle ring, and black hairs on the head in red cattle

Analyses of several studies on Norwegian cow and bull families led to the conclusion that muzzle color is produced by one pair of genes; the heterozygotes having either flesh colored, mixed colored or slate colored muzzles, while the homozygotes having only flesh colored or slate colored muzzles. It was calculated that about 48% of the flesh colored muzzles are heterozygotes. The muzzle color is independent of sex, while the light muzzle ring was predominantly found in bulls. The light muzzle ring was associated with whitening of the inner sides of the thighs, but not with the light zone around the eye. The presence of light muzzle ring is thought to be dominant The appearance of black hair in red cattle is considered dominant, being more pronounced in bulls; more than one pair of genes is thought responsible for it.
