Inheritance of pollen restoration and transmission of cytoplasmic sterility in popcorn

Pollen restoration of both inbred lines K55 and Tx 127C is apparently conditioned by a single dominant gene. The genes for pollen restoration in these two lines appear to be allelic. One popcorn line was discovered which appeared to be fully effective in restoring fertility to the Texas form of cytoplasmic male sterility. The use of cytoplasmic sterile background in a backcross program to identify plants heterozygous for pollen restoration for further backcrossing was satisfactory for two backcross generations. Microscopic analysis of pollen from fertile BC2 progeny and the recurrent parent showed no apparent differences.
