Inheritance of protein, texture, and yield in wheat

Estimates of heritable and non-heritable variability for percent protein, kernel texture, and yield were obtained from 4 segregating populations of crosses involving 4 soft red winter wheat varieties - Atlas 66, Leap, Chancellor, and a Malakof-Nittany selection. Heritability estimates ranged from 54 to 69% for protein content, 29-60% for texture, and 14-53% for yield. Negative correlations were obtained between percent protein and yield in 3 of the 4 populations. Percent protein and texture were positively correlated in 1 population and negatively correlated in another. No significant correlations were obtained between texture and yield.
