Inheritance of recessive black in sheep

Inheritance of recessive black in sheep

Jour Heredity 48(6): 254-258

Black color in sheep is usually considered to be due to a single pair of recessive genes even though "exceptions" have been reported. Evidence from breeding results is presented in this paper which suggests the existence of two pairs of recessive genes for black, either of which when homozygous would result in black (w1 w1 and w2 W2). It is postulated that these 2 pairs of recessive genes for black (w1 w1 w2 w2) were present in the primitive Mouflon species of sheep which was trie principal progenitor of the fine wool breeds.
