Inheritance of resistance to the striped cucumber beetle in Cucurbita pepo

The C. pepo varieties, Royal Acorn and Early Golden Bush Scallop, were highly resistant to the striped cucumber beetle, whereas Black Zucchini was highly susceptible. In each case, the F1 hybrid was resistant but inferior to the resistant parent. Also, the F2 seedlings in each case were resistant indicating that resistance was not governed by a simple dominant gene. Backcross of the F1 with the susceptible parent did not give a 1:1 ratio of resistance to susceptibility, confirming that more than one factor was involved in the inheritance of resistance. The backcross seedlings of the F1 with the susceptible parent were susceptible, whereas those from the backcross of the F1 with the resistant parent were resistant, indicating a strong influence of recurrent parent. Environmental, dominance and additive factors are involved in the inheritance of resistance and the inheritance of resistance is mainly additive in nature. Resistance is partially dominant over susceptibility and maternal influence is not involved in the inheritance of resistance. Stem damage was not sufficiently consistent to warrant conclusive results. Resistance is inherited to such a degree that it can be included in a plant breeding program.
