Inheritance of resistance to tobacco ringspot and cucumber mosaic viruses in black cowpea crosses

Inheritance of resistance to tobacco ringspot virus in Black cowpea had previously been shown to be simple in 1 -type of cross where both parents were resistant to cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). In crosses involving a parent resistant to TRSV and susceptible to CMV with 1 susceptible to TRSV and resistant to CMV, however, the inheritance was more complex. Data on segregation in F2 and backcross generations indicate linkage of TRSV resistance to CMV susceptibility. Crossing-over of about 25% would account for most recombinations. An epistatic recessive inhibitor of TRSV susceptibility appeared to have been operating in the cross and would account for the uneven distribution of parental types appearing in the F2 as well as the very low proportion of progeny susceptible to both TRSV and CMV.
