Inheritance of season of ripening in certain peach progenies

Inheritance of season of ripening was studied in crosses between (1) Jerseyland and five early-ripening varieties or selections, including Prairie Daybreak, and (2) Prairie Daybreak and another early-ripening selection (7039). The presence of genes at six loci acting cumulatively to shorten the time required for ripening was detected. Specific modifiers are postulated for five loci. When in the dominant condition, genes at three of the loci shortened the period of ripening by 2 or more weeks.
