Reciprocal crosses between the varieties CD3820 and CI4748 of A. strigosa were studied. The grey-striped seed colour of CD3820 was dominant to the white colour of CI4748 and controlled by a single factor. Resistance to each of the races 6, 7, 7A and 8 of Puccinia graminis f. sp. avenae appeared to be determined by the same gene or genes; similarly the genes responsible for resistance to race 202 of P. coronata var, avenae also conferred resistance to race 258.
