Inheritance of the second factor for resistance to bunt, Tilletia caries and T. foetida, in the wheat variety Martin

Duplicate samples of F3 progeny from the cross Martin X Elgin were inoculated individually with races T-l and L-9 of Tilletia caries and T. foetida, respectively. The variety Martin was resistant to both races, Elgin was susceptible. The samples inoculated with race T-l were grown at Davis, California, those inoculated with race L-9 were grown at Pullman, Washington. Resistance was conditioned by 2 independent genes; one conditioned resistance to race T-l, the second to race L-9, and neither had any effect on the alternate race. Selected F4 populations were tested individually to 25 races of the pathogen. The M gene conditioned resistance to 15 races and was completely dominant to race T-l. The M2 gene, which was incompletely dominant in its reaction to race L-9, conferred resistance to 5 races. The combined coverage provided by these 2 genes adequately explains the resistant reaction of the parental variety Martin to 18 of the known races.
