Inheritance of wood properties in pine

Inheritance of wood properties in pine

Proceedings of the Fourth Southern Conference on Forest Tree Improvement held at Athens, Georgia, January 8 and 9 1957. 27-29

In studies of Pinus taeda conducted in Texas, no high correlations were detected between tracheid lengths in the first growth ring and in the mature wood; some correlation in length was found between fifth-year and mature-wood tracheids and a very high correlation occurred between tenth-year and mature-wood tracheids, indicating that selection may be effected in ten-year old trees. There was no correlation between the growth rates of trees and their tracheid lengths.
