Inherited (congenital) cataract in the dog

Inherited (congenital) cataract in the dog

American Journal of Pathology 34(5): 965-975

One male among 1, 129 beagles reared under identical conditions showed developmental cataract. This dog had impaired vision and developed complete bilateral cataract at 5 months of age. Of 25 puppies sired by this dog, 22 had cataract in various stages of development. In the eyes of puppies with complete cataract the outstanding lesions were microphthalmia, retinal folds, and opacity of the lens. Puppies with partial cataract had only slight microphthalmia and retinal folding.
