Inherited alpha -lactalbumin and beta -lactoglobulin polymorphism in Indian zebu cattle. Comparison of zebu and buffalo alpha -lactalbumins

Inherited alpha -lactalbumin and beta -lactoglobulin polymorphism in Indian zebu cattle. Comparison of zebu and buffalo alpha -lactalbumins

Nature. Lond., 797-799

Milk samples from 138 zebu cows of different breeds (Hariana, Sahiwal, desi) and from 15 crosses between Jersey sires and Hariana dams were examined by paper electrophoresis. The distribution of the alpha -lactalbumin and beta -lactoglobulin phenotypes and the frequency of the genes for alpha -A, alpha -B, beta -A and beta -B are shown in tabular form. The frequency of the gene for alpha -A was lowest and that of the gene for beta -A highest in the crosses. Separate estimates of gene frequencies relating to 31 dam-daughter pairs in the Hariana population gave frequencies of 0.181 and 0.819 for alpha -A and alpha -B resp., and 0.090 and 0.910 for beta -A and beta -B resp. A comparison of the frequencies of the genes for alpha -A, alpha -B, beta -A and beta -B in cattle of different countries showed that the gene for alpha -A had the highest value in Indian zebu cattle, with African breeds having intermediate and European breeds zero values. On the other hand, the gene for beta -A was most frequent in the European breeds and least frequent in the Indian zebu. The difference between Indian and African zebu cattle in the frequency of the gene for alpha -A, although fairly large, was not statistically significant. The frequency of the gene for beta -A was, however, significantly higher in the White Fulani in Nigeria than in Indian zebu cattle. Cow alpha -lactalbumin-A and buffalo alpha -lactalbumin showed close similarities in their physico-chemical properties.
