Inherited variations in the post-albumins of cattle serum

By means of starch geTelectrophoresis a genetically controlled variation in the post-albumins of cattle serum has been revealed. Three post-albumin types determined by the alleles PaA and PaB are recognized. Treatment with neuraminidase shows that the cattle post-albumins contain sialic acids. Family data and twin studies support the genetical hypothesis. The frequencies of the post-albumin alleles found in the Swedish Red and White breed (SRB) were PaA = 0.61 and PaB = 0.39 and in the Swedish Friesian (SLB) 0.21 and 0.79, respectively. The value of the post-albumin system in the diagnosis of zygosity in cattle twins is demonstrated. In the SRB dizygosity will be revealed in about 40% of dizygous twin pairs.
