Inhibition of Erwinia amylovora by bacteria isolated from fire blight cankers

Bacteria associated with Erwinia amylovora in fire blight cankers on apple and pear trees were found to be non-pathogenic, and many of the isolates were inhibitory to E. amylovora in culture tests. The data suggested that the associated bacteria inhibited E. amylovora in culture by lowering the pH of the media below that favourable for growth, i.e. below 4-4.
